Report: Charlotte To C-USA Premium Story

According to, Charlotte will move to the C-USA in 2013. Where does the A-10 go from here?

According to Brett McMurphy of, the Charlotte 49ers and five other teams will join Conference USA starting in 2013.

With the move, the 49ers will be the second team to exit the Atlantic 10 in 2013 along with Temple heading to the Big East.

Old Dominion is also making the move to the C-USA which should figure to keep the door wide open for Virginia Commonwealth and George Mason to make their departure from the CAA as well.

In recent weeks it had been reported that VCU, GMU, and perhaps Butler (of the Horizon League) would be on the move to the A-10. With today's developments, that now sounds a lot more likely.

If those three aforementioned teams were to join the A-10, it would place the number of schools at 15. If Commissioner Bernadette McGlade and Co. want to add a 16th team, look for them to head somewhere in the Northeast.

It would seem logical to pick up a team such as Davidson that would fill the North Carolina footprint, but I think that the conference wants to get away from that type of setup.

If I were the commissioner, I would be looking at a strong Midwestern school (Creighton?) or another school in the New York-Pennsylvania area.

Alas, it remains to be seen what happens. One thing is for certain: it was a good move for the 49ers. C-USA is far better than the Sun Belt, a league that they had previously been rumored to join. But it's also a good move for the A-10. Charlotte had struggled mightily since moving over from the old C-USA, and bringing in new and viable talent with VCU and GMU (and even Butler) will further this strong basketball conference.
