Former University of Michigan sophomore forward Evan Smotrycz decided on March 21 that he would like an opportunity to play elsewhere.
The six-foot-nine Smotrycz averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game this past season for the Wolverines, but felt as though he would be a better fit for another program.
With his school year ending on April 20, he'll have plenty of time to choose a new school. That hasn't stopped him from narrowing down the search, though.
"I kind of narrowed my list down this weekend to Colorado, Maryland, Baylor, Xavier, Clemson, and Providence," Smotrycz told A10Report.com.
Playing style and the new coaching staff will likely be a big factor in his decision, but he was certain to make what he termed a "lateral move".
"As of right now, I'm going to Providence this upcoming weekend," Smotrycz said. "Then to Maryland the following weekend, then possibly Colorado the next weekend."
Although this process can be taxing, he doesn't want to draw it out too long.
"I'm not looking to be flying all over the place and stretching out the decision," Smotrycz said. "But at the same time, this is my only second chance, so I don't want to mess anything up and make sure I get the right spot. It would definitely have to be a little before summer school starts so I could get down to school for that."
With finals just a couple weeks away, things have certainly been busy for the Massachusetts native.
"It's been hectic talking to coaches while finishing up school," Smotrycz said. "Catching up from the tournament, all of the work that we missed. But it's good to have options and it's flattering. I'm looking to finally finding a school where I can go."
He noted that the Michigan staff has been supportive in helping him contact prospective schools, and he has worked out with UM players in pickup games.
One of those programs has been A-10 stalwart Xavier. The Musketeers are highly interested in him.
"To be honest, I haven't had a lot of time to do my homework on most of these schools but I've been talking closely with Coach [Chris] Mack and Coach [Travis] Steele," Smotrycz said. "They're just looking for a stretch four in myself and a guy that stretch the D as well as make plays off the bounce. I'd love to get out for a visit and we're kind of working on that. We're in the process right now [of setting something up]."
Although Xavier is the lone non-Big Six school of the bunch, that doesn't bother Smotrycz.
"Xavier, what is that, like four of the last five Sweet 16s?" Smotrycz noted. "I'd put them in that group even though they are in the A-10, that's a high-level program. I'd lump them in with everyone else."
